Seventeen-year-old Elizabeth Evans dreams of inheriting her father's farm and tending to the animals by herself, but her mother urges her to give up her dreams because farming isn't suitable work for a privileged young woman. When Elizabeth meets an Acadian woman she begins to realize there are issues in her world much larger than whether she will or will not have to get married.
